Participation in NSS help in the personality development of student volunteers, it also contributes to the capacity development of a student and provide for an holistic education. Simultaneously it is continuously contributing to the national development in terms of building societies, creation of infrastructure and maintaining sustainable development .No amount of monetary inputs can substitute the man hour inputs which are given exclusively by the NSS in the spirit of voluntarism. National Service Scheme (NSS) is a noble experiment in academic expansion. It inculcates the spirit of NSS Volunteers to work among the students and teachers through sustained community interaction. It brings academic institutions closer to society. Over the years NSS has emerged as India’s largest student youth movement in linking with the community.

With selfless motto “NOT ME BUT YOU”,the National Service Scheme was launched in Oriental College in 1979.Shri K Indrajit Singh, H.O.D. Education Department and Smt. K. Ibemhal Devi Associate Professor ,Manipuri Department were the first two programme officers.

The NSS Cell, Oriental College has made its mark of distinction in the annals of our college. Right from its inception it has been striving hard and rendering services to the society. There has been a tremendous response from the Volunteers and NSS Programme Officers during the last 35 years. Under this scheme, the college is having two units with capacity of hundred volunteers each. From the very beginning two units perform regular and special camps. Special campings are organised generally on various developmental issues of national importance. In the past the themes of the Special Camping Programmes have been “Youth Against Famine”, “Youth Against Dirt and Disease”, “Youth for Rural Reconstruction”, and “Youth for Mass Literacy”, “Youth for National Integration & Social Harmony”, “Health, Public sanitation and Personal Hygiene “,”Conservation of Natural Resources and Preservation of Cultural Heritage” etc.

Recently we also organized a 7-Day special camp from 25th June to 1st July 2014 on the theme “Youth for Eco-development”. Our Respected Principal Dr. Th. Biren Singh conferred Principal’s award for best volunteer to Kh. Michael Singh of NSS unit-II.

We carried out many NSS regular activities such as Republic day Celebration , Organisation of blood donation camp, Tree plantation, Social Service camp, Traffic awareness programme, Disaster management Course, Adventure camp, First aid training programme, Capacity building Programme ,Adventure course, Life skill development programme, Debates, Essay writing competition, Ex-tempore speech etc. Our volunteers are also deputed to various National programmes such as Youth Festival, NSS Mega Camp, Youth exchange and honesty programme etc.
